With insufficient milk production as one of the leading causes of early breastfeeding cessation, this presentation will explore new research that is starting to yield a window into this complication of lactation. A genetic underpinning of low milk supply related to gene polymorphisms and variants in mammary secretory genes as well as chronic systemic inflammation have all been implicated as culprits to this common challenge for nursing parents and lactation personnel.
Learning Objectives:
List 3 factors that can contribute to insufficient milk production.
Identify several genetic underpinnings of low milk production.
Describe how systemic inflammation can impede milk production.
