Breastfeeding Infants and Children with Cancer

Breastfeeding children with cancer is un-researched; therefore the needs and challenges associated with breastfeeding during cancer treatment in infancy and childhood are not widely understood. This presentation draws on novel research, as well as professional and personal experiences, to explore some of these little-known challenges. We will also discuss some practical suggestions for clinical lactation support for this population.

  • Describe the maternal/parental motivations and clinical relevance of continuing to breastfeed a child with cancer.
  • Identify at least 2 common challenges faced by parents of children with cancer.
  • Summarise some specific lactation needs of families during chemotherapy and surgery.
